Confident Performers: Boosting Stage Presence and Showmanship in Kids

As a dance teacher, I believe that one of the most important aspects of dance training is the development of stage presence and showmanship. It's not just about perfecting the technical aspects of a routine, but also about capturing the attention of the audience and conveying emotion through movement.

At Lucy Evans Academy of Dance, we strive to teach our students how to be confident performers. Here are some tips for boosting stage presence and showmanship in kids:

1. Facial Expressions

Facial expressions are a crucial part of any performance. They show the audience what emotions the dancer is feeling and help to convey the story of the dance. Teach your child to practice making different expressions in the mirror while practicing their routine. Encourage them to exaggerate their expressions so that they are easily visible from the back of the audience.

2. Eye Contact

Eye contact is another important aspect of stage presence. Encourage your child to look up and make eye contact with the audience, even if they are feeling nervous. This helps to connect the audience to the performance and makes the dancer appear more confident and engaging.

3. Posture and Body Language

A strong posture and confident body language are essential for a polished performance. Teach your child to stand up straight, keep their shoulders back, and engage their core muscles. This will make them appear taller and more confident on stage.

4. Energy and Enthusiasm

Audiences love performers who exude energy and enthusiasm. Encourage your child to smile and show their excitement for the performance. This will help to engage the audience and make the dance more enjoyable to watch.

5. Technique and Timing

While stage presence and showmanship are important, it's also important not to forget about technique and timing. A polished routine with correct technique and precise timing will help to enhance the overall performance and make the dancer appear more professional.

At Lucy Evans Academy of Dance, we believe in providing a positive and supportive environment for our students to develop their stage presence and showmanship skills. Our classes are designed to help children of all ages and abilities to become confident performers.
